The truth about the leprechaun, the easter bunny, santa, etc.

My 9 year old lost a tooth. Yes she still has a baby teeth.  When she came home from school with a little treasure chest for her tooth she was so excited. I guess when you lose a tooth at school it is a big deal. In the lower grades you get a felt shaped tooth to store your lost tooth. In 4th grade I guess they still give a little holder. She was then pondering how much money she would receive from the tooth fairy (I hope she did not mention this at school!)  Yes, the tooth fairy is alive and well in this household. Which got me thinking about when do they figure it all out or when do I tell them – no questions yet. I have friends who love the phrase “if you don’t believe you don’t receive!”

As I was told by friends with older children that you MUST tell your child the “truth” about Santa, the easter bunny, the little leprechaun the comes on this day to drop off candy in your shoes (who started THAT one?). They cannot go to 6th grade knowing, I was told (I still have a few years!) My heart breaks and I know it’s part of life. As I recall a close friend from grade school telling me her story about how she told her 10 year old about Santa. He began to cry and then he figured it out – well than what about EB? What about TF? and then he broke down even more!  Such as the reality of kids getting older we need to have those tough conversations. I just read her The Care and Keeping of You Book, the Body Book for Girls and yikes she’s still losing teeth how can THIS be just around the corner too? But it is and like other moms I answer questions as they come up but tend to avoid telling – only when asked. That is my policy and I am sticking to it – at least for now! So tonight I will have them put their shoes out (forgot to last night) put in a little candy (er…the leprechaun did it) and enjoy the magic for a while longer!

Free online baby clothing exchange

The following is a sponsored post – a free online kids clothing exchange service.

Have a pile of baby clothes that you wish you could exchange for the next size up?  There is a great web site called Baby Clothing Network,a free online trading service for kids clothing.  It’s a easy way to trade clothing fairly because it uses a trade-for credit system. No money exchanges on the site but rather if you trade a box of items you earn equivalent credits based on the value of the goods. What a great idea!   Check out my video.

Mom Travel Tips

I was so excited to be traveling yesterday for a presentation and I thought I was prepared. That was until I was stuck at the airport for 4.5 hours!  Of course I had my hand sanitizer and wipes and a change of clothes and comfy shoes. After realizing I did not have the proper bag to fit the accumulating magazines and chocolate I kept buying (how many chocolate stores can one airport have?) I found myself wandering through those travel stores to see what’s in store.  Here is what I wish I had with me.

A bag on wheels.  Even though I only went for the day shelping though the airport with a bag that I just kept adding stuffy to only weighed me down. Here is a cute one from baggallini a rolling tote! I like how it has three separate compartments: one designed for your clothes, one for cosmetics and a center compartment for your laptop, paperwork and room for accessories and additional clothing! The company was founded by flight attendants so they know a good bag.  The day tripper bag is also perfect.

I am a stickler about bringing on a carry on bag that has a FULL zipper. At some point in my life I must have lost items on a plane and was tramatized.  Can you believe out of the many bags I own only one was big enough? Geese I think I need a new bag!

Here’s a tote to go from Brookstone, If you are like me and tend to accumulate stuff in the airport – but I just had to have that Oprah mug – this one is great!  I like it as it folds down to a tiny square so you can put it in another bag and use it when you need it.

Of course if you hate to dig in your bag to locate an item try one of the purse organizers. I love purseket. I also adore this purse to go by purse bling.

Happy travels!

The Must Have Makeup – Glossy Lip Pencils

What’s in for spring for make-up? Lots of things!  Colorful eye makeup, shimmery shades of nail polish and bright lipsticks are in.  But my favorite trend in makeup is the glossy, chunky lip pencil. These fat pencils act like a bit of a lip stick but have the shine of a gloss. They are easy to apply and every makeup line seems to have one. Here are a few favorites.

Clinique’s pencil is called the Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Color Balm.  For $15.00 you can try the latest trend. These are extremely moisturizing with a bit of shine. Mega Mellon is a nice shade.

Nars has one called the Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil.  They come in six shades and each has Vitamin E. Cost is $24.00. My favorite shade is Frivolous which is a iridescent pink shade.

Tarte is my go to makeup line as their makeup contains more natural ingredients. Their Lip Surgence Natural Lip Tint is based on their fantastic cheek stains. The company says you’ll see an increase in lips moisture content after using for 28 days, so it’s like an extra bonus.  Amused is a bright pink which is perfect for this season and is $24.00.

It’s a pencil, it’s a lipstick, it’s a gloss all in one!

A mommy tactic backfired!

I have done it several times very successfully but this time I was caught!  That’s right, on an occasional night out I have put both my children to bed a bit early then had the babysitter arrive after they are “sleeping” (this time they really weren’t sleeping). It just seems easier as sometimes they get all excited and can be a challenge getting to bed. Made sense to me!

I admit at times I have “turned” the clock back a half-hour just to get them to sleep a bit early.  This time both my 6 and 9 year old knew something was up – mom and dad sneaking into the other room, whispering, texting, etc.  Both girls went to sleep very nicely and then I knew something was up! They were so cute though as I heard them, preparing to catch me asking me why I had earrings on when I was going to bed and “is that make up you are wearing”?

When the sitter arrived I left for just a couple hours up the street to a neighborhood party to meet my husband.  When I came home I heard from the sitter that they did come down to greet her to say Hi, told them they were spying on me, chatted for a few minutes and then went to bed!

The next day morning they told me all about how they knew and how funny it was.  I know…I know…. some of you might say that is just not right! Others who have really young infants say great idea as really that is the only time you may get out to have a few hours to yourself!

Now that my kids are older I’ve decided I can’t really do this anymore as few thoughts have came to my mind like it might come back to haunt me (i.e. sneaking out of the house, and really it’s not truthful!) But I thought it was a good mommy tactic when they are young! I am sure there are other mommies out there who have some ideas up their sleeves to achieve balance in their lives and to get things done whether it be a night out, a TV show for your kids to watch while you cook dinner or taking a quick shower (flashbacks come to mind as I put my daughter in her bouncy seat right by the bathroom door where I could see her!)  As long as the kids are safe and having a good time our mommy tactics can be smart, sassy and can help us achieve balance!

To write

I admit it. I am a bit obsessed with notebooks. Yes, notebooks – the kind you write in – remember those? I tend to collect them. I think it started as my days working at a busy PR agency where, back then you actually wrote things down in a notebook and actually brought a notebook to a meeting with you to take notes (versus nowadays with your iphone, ipad, laptop)  I remember all team members had a notebook for every project and we did have a ton of them.  I still use this system to this day!  So I am always on the search for cool, colorful notebooks!

Usually I just head to TJ Maxx and Marshalls to check out what colorful, wymsical and fun ones they have on sale. However when I head to a business meeting I prefer and all black or this grey at a glance notebook.   It’s great for project management.

Of course my go to store  – Target –  has a bunch of useful ones like this writers-readers notebook. Maybe it can help with writers block?

These artsy ones are pretty cute too.

I am going to have to buy this one from Cath Kidston at Target – just love her items. Now don’t the colorful ones evoke more inspiration?

For the finer tastes Moelskines has nice quality notebooks.  Target sells this season trendy color Moelskines – pink!

If you have any ideas on where to purchase cool notebooks send them my way!
