A chat with award winning filmmaker and author

As I have mentioned before I find inspiration in other’s stories of turning their passion (or their problem) into success. It’s Q&A time!  This week Andrea Buchanan, author of Live and Let Love, Notes from Extraordinary Women on the Layers, the Laughter and the Litter of Love answers our quick Q&A.

Q:  Tell us in a nutshell about your career and how you became a writer.

I write books as well as television and film and I’m a director and a producer.  My work has been mostly in the non-fiction/documentary area, however, over the last four years, I’ve been doing more scripted television and co-directed a short film with Jennifer Aniston which I wrote called “Room 10”.   I always wrote poetry and journaled, and just took that interest to the next level in non-scripted shows: The most famous is Behind The Music, where I honed my writing chops.

Q:  What would you tell other writers who are struggling?

There’s not a writer who isn’t struggling, so just know that you are not alone. It’s a very isolating business and there are days that are less productive than others. But if you sit down and work everyday, at least for an hour, something will come from that hour.  Something I learned from one of my writing mentors, is that there’s no such thing as a crappy first draft.  Write it, get it out, let someone read it, and then improve upon it.

Q:  Any advice for other women owned businesses?

Try to be kind to yourself every day. Stay present, have goals set, put them up somewhere so that you can see them. Surround yourself with people who will lift you up instead of tear you down.

Award Winning Filmmaker and author Andrea Buchanan’s new book is called Live and Let Love, Notes from Extraordinary Women on the Layers, the Laughter and the Litter of Love. It’s an essay of love written by some of America’s most fascinating and vibrant women.  Find out more here.

The Royal Wedding – Hats and more Hats!

Of course everyone has been talking about the Royal Wedding and the first thing I did this morning was fast forward to the moment Kate Middleton stepped out of her hotel to reveal a glimpse of the DRESS!  What can I say except it was classic, elegant and designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. It featured “traditional Carrickmacross craftsmanship,” a lace technique that dates back to the 1800s.

Something borrowed was from the Queen.  Kate’s tiara is a 1936 Cartier halo.  But I could not believe all those hats!  I loved seeing everyone in hats!  How come we don’t wear hats at weddings here in the US?

Of course Victoria Beckham’s hat was brilliant!  I also loved Sophie, Countess of Wessex’s hat which looked lovely with her blond hair.  Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice hats certainly made a statement but weren’t my favorite.  My favorite was the mother of the bride – that blue color was so beautiful and it was created by Berkshire based milliner Jane Corbett. I want to go out and buy a hat now but where would I wear it??

Disney Channel’s Lemonade Mouth

My kids loved High School Musical, Camp Rock, etc. and now Lemonade Mouth is a big hit, especially in my house.

I thought it was a great story and what makes it even better is that the creator is from Wayland, Mass.  It is the story of five high school misfits who meet in detention, form a band and challenge their snobby classmates.  Ah….reminds me of the days of The Breakfast Club!

The Boston Globe wrote a great story on Mark Peter Hughes.   Check it out!

Kids Get Cooking!

Easter is over and thank goodness I did not have to cook. We went to my sister’s house where she prepared a wonderful meal.  I don’t cook – figuring out what to serve each night for my kids stresses me out as I want my kids to eat healthy and I want to prepare healthy meals but it’s not something I like to do. (Many nights are either whole grain/wheat pasta or a trip to Whole Foods market’s prepared food section!) Ironically my 9 year old loves to take cooking classes!

So glad that I found this online series from Weight Watchers called “Cooking With Kids” video series, which brings to life teachable moments to help kids value fresh and healthy foods and to instill good eating habits at an early age.  I like that is it educational as well.  Kids (and parents) can learn, where the food is harvested, the culture behind the food the difference between fresh food and processed food.

Renowned chef Lidia Bastianich and chocolatier Jacques Torres along with the kids go behind-the-scenes to learn the art of selecting fresh foods at the market and preparing them in nutritious, tasty foods.  From homemade pasta to roasting cocoa beans for chocolate, kids get hands-on experience and learn the value of healthful eating.  It’s also fun to watch with your kids.
