Humidifiers May reduce Airborn Flu Virus @Vicks #BehindEar

What a wonderful event today at Finale Restaurant in Boston hosted by the makers of the new Vicks behind the ear thermometer – I know… where was this when my kids were young?

Always nice to see local bloggers and the ladies from Boston Parent Bloggers and get great information.

The timing of this event was perfect as cold and flu season is approaching.  Dr. Meg Meeker was the guest speaker and she had some great tips for this upcoming cold and flu season.  I am glad that in our gift bag we did receive The NEW Vicks® Behind Ear Thermometer as I cannot wait to test it out (since we just got over strep a few weeks back hopefully I won’t need it soon….but I will let you know how I like it)

For years I was using the in the ear thermometer which my kids hated!  This is much more convenient, especially for young babies and more accurate with just a touch and no sticking anything anywhere!

Dr. Meg suggested you make sure you have these items on hand this season. She also had some great tips!

  • Stock ibuprofen and Tylenol (and you can alternate between them for fever and pain)
  • Lots of liquids for your sick kids
  • Stave a cold; feed a fever: total myth: all kids that are sick with the flu or cold need liquids
  • Utilize saline nose drops
  • Try the new Thermometer as kids won’t fight you – cannot wait to try the Behind Ear
  • If your child has a fever don’t put them in a cold bath – tepid water only
  • Use a Cold Mist humidifier when your child has a cold and use a vaporizer when they are sicker (fever, flu)
  • Keep your house clean
  • Teach your kids how to sneeze in their elbow (not in their hands or everywhere!)
  • Change toothbrushes once a month
  • Use paper cups when your kids are sick

What was most interesting is that she says to keep the humidity in your home at 40-60% . They also gave us a humidity monitor to check room levels. It is important as a new study just published in Environmental Health Journal suggests home humidifiers may play a role in reducing survival of Airborne Flu virus.  The study sponsored by Kaz, the manufacturer of Vicks brand humidifiers can be found at Environmental Health Journal

Tis the season of to do’s Holiday Cards

It’s the busy time of year:  holiday parties, shopping, visits to Santa and other various things pop up like those annoying holiday cards!  It’s just annoying to me as I have yet to do mine and I see all these lovely cards each day coming in the mail with happy faces and multiple photos of friends and families at different locations throughout the year.

This year I may send out Happy New Year cards as my to do list gets longer and longer. Sure, it is easier than ever to put together a holiday card – hello CVS, tiny prints and shuttyerfly.com – now if only you could write them, stamp them and mail them for me that would be fantastic!

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular with the @Rockettes in Boston

Growing up I remember it was a big deal to head into Boston and go to the theatre. For us it was attending the performance of The Boston Ballet’s Nutcracker (which I have yet to take my kids to!) But there is just something magical about those Rockettes. For as long as I can remember seeing the world famous Rockettes was on my to do list!

That is why I was so excited to be able to attend the performance the other night at the City Performing Arts Center-Wang Theatre. My kids have never been to the theatre and it was a nice last minute surprise. When I told them, they were excited as they saw the commercials for the performance! You might have heard how magical, delightful and spectacular the show is…..AND IT WAS!

We are lucky that the Radio City Christmas Spectacular® starring the world-famous Rockettes are in Boston from Friday December 2nd – Wednesday, Dec 28th so there is still time to see this great performance and what a performance it was.   I was in awe, like my kids!  This year’s show features brand-new scenes and songs, spectacular new sets, dazzling new costumes, an amazing 50-foot LED screen, and an unforgettable new finale!

The dancers movements are so precise and the Parade of the Wooden Soldiers scene was fantastic.  Of course my kids were shocked when the reenactment of the first Christmas came on the stage. It was a Live Nativity –yes live, meaning that there were real camels, donkey’s and sheep! The kids all squealed!

I loved the  “Christmas in New York,” with the Broadway-style singers and a life-sized double-decker bus. Seeing the show definitely put me in a holiday mood for sure and there is a favorite number for all ages. My 10 year old loved the Magic is there scene in which Santa helps a couple young friends with their last minute shopping and includes a trip to the North Pole.  My seven year old loved the New York at Christmas (takes after me!) I also thought the living nativity was great.

Outlet shopping tips

It is that time of year again when my friends and I hit the local outlets. We are lucky as we have outlets within a few hours of us. The Wrentham Premium Outlets in Wrentham, MA and Settlers Green in North Conway are both pretty great.

Each fall we try to head to either one BEFORE Thanksgiving because let’s face it, after is just a zoo.  A couple weekends ago we headed up to North Conway and at my suggestion we headed to the larger, more popular stores like Coach and Gap and thank goodness we did as on that Saturday the lines we sooooo long. Here are some tips if you are going to hit the outlets this season:

  • Avoid weekends if you can – I know this might be difficult, but it is just crazy then.  If you have to go on a weekend get there first thing or go there right before they close. Check out the larger, key stores earlier or later to avoid the crowds.
  • Check your coupons – many times outlets do not allow you to use the store coupons.  However, many outlets do offer special packages and discounts so check websites before you leave.
  • Have fun – Stay hydrated, try not to carry a lot of bags and be strategic. We actually saw women with shopping bags on wheels. Stop for breaks and wear comfy shoes. Sometimes is does pay to map out your course of what stores to go to first.  I always love the outlets for a wider selection, great sales and of course fun company!

Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday…

You were expecting a great post on all the great deals I got shopping weren’t you??  Yeah so I missed them all. I admit it. I was online this morning for a bit but this year I am really focused and I am not going to buy my kids a ton of toys and considering we just bought them a puppy – really only Santa will be buying a few gifts.  I like the idea of supporting local businesses – It’s just that this year I was not into running around frantically trying to score a deal.  A friend went out shopping on Black Friday and told me that in some stores it was 50% off until 9:00 am – missed that one. This is such a busy time of year and I wanted to cherish Thanksgiving a little bit without the hustle and bustle of thinking about getting up early and shopping- wait did I say that?  I used to get up bright and early every year on Black Friday but I wanted to sleep in, enjoy the kids and the puppy and RELAX (and of course watch the news with everyone else running around!) I did do a bit of shopping on girls’ weekend – that post to come with some tips on outlet shopping but first things first…on to the next item of holiday to do’s – the Christmas card!

It’s Slipper Day!

Today is the day that my daughter’s grade school decided to have slipper day.  Check out the slippers that I picked up for her at Marshalls.  I wish I was there to check out all the fun slippers. I hope all the kids stay safe as my worry was that someone would slip!  Luckily these slipper had traction on the bottom. With the weather rainy and raw I think I will stay in my slippers while I work.  Cute and different than pajama day!

It’s Slipper Day!
