What Moms Really Want for Mother’s Day – practical, traditional and tech

Mother’s Day is right around the corner. A few companies sent me products to review for the blog and my TV segment. Here are some of the fun ideas for gifts!

According to Wayfair.com, the online store for hundreds of home items, on their Mother’s day survey 68% of women would rather receive a practical household gift over flowers, chocolates, and even jewelry this year. While I do love a good blender, (I have been eyeballing the kitchen aid mixer for years (hint, hint), for a practical gift I love this creation: the SHOULDIT

  • A scarf is always a nice gift AND this one is functional! SHOLDIT.com looks like a traditional infinity scarf or wrap. But look closer and you’ll find two spacious zippered pockets perfectly sized to carry mom’s essentials – such as credit cards, keys, cash, cell phone, etc. — so she can leave the handbag at home. Perfect for the new mom! Starts at $49.00

If mom is more traditional think jewelry, chocolate, flowers and here are a few ideas:

  • Jewelry is the best gift. Tiffany & Co.  Alex and Ani and David Yurman are my favorites. Even a handmade bracelet is nice!
  • Of course chocolate is a treat!  Anytime I walk down the chocolate isle at Whole Food it is like a dream seeing all the organic chocolate in all yummy flavors. Dad: grab a variety and put it in a nice bag, it’s that easy.
  • Flowers:  Have the kids make you flowers as they last! These felt flower bouquet from  kiwicrate.com lasts and dad can involve the kids in an activity while mom sleeps in. $12.95
  • We love the gift ideas from calendars.com.  Make Your Own Stepping Stones Kit is so cute.  If Mom loves being in the garden, then this kit is perfect! These make great keepsakes for years to come and Mom will smile every time she steps outside. The kit includes press-in numbers, letters, and punctuation marks, but a handprint is always a personal touch.https://www.calendars.com/Gardening-Gifts-for-Mom/Make-Your-Own-Stepping-Stones-Kit/prod201100014064
  • Also from calendars.com  the Just Between Us Book is a nice keepsake for moms and daughters. This beautiful keepsake journal is a must for any teenage girl and her mother. Advice, guidelines, and prompts by author Meredith Jacobs and her thirteen-year-old daughter Sofie pave the way to discussing everything from friends and school to crushes and growing up. With plenty of free space to write about whatever’s on their minds and fun pages for drawing pictures and making lists, this journal will open the lines of communication and help moms and daughters create memories that will last a lifetime https://www.calendars.com/Inspirational-Gifts-for-Mom/Just-Between-Us-Book/prod201300018490/

Technology:

  • Moms love convenience and technology and I love my ipad. There are so many fun cases for the ipad which makes a nice gift:  BuiltNY.com cases are just great. They are made from NEOPRENE (like the wet suit material) Great protection and Florals are in this season!  $29.99
  • And if mom loves her Technology but is worried about cell phone radiation:   Bodywellchip.com  -  The Bodywell Chip is scientifically-proven to curb up to 80% of cell phone radiation without interfering with your phone’s signal.  Research shows cell phones do emit electromagnetic radiation which can be processed into the body at a specific absorption rate (SAR), which could negatively affect health, possibly causing brain tumors, headaches, fatigue, loss of sleep, and more.  $29.99

Disclosure: the above companies sent me the products to review. All opinions are my own.

Some fun Mother’s Day gift ideas!

Pedicure season is here in New England…I think @MiniLuxe

It was a bit chilly this morning but I did get to wear flip flops once this weekend so I think we can say it’s official – pedicure season is here! Last week I visited Mini Luxe in Lexington center for the first time.  They had a booth at @blogbetterBOS and we received a gift card from @MiniLuxe to check out their services. I loved the selection of polish colors to choose from. I also liked how they had smaller sized bottles of their line to buy (only $4.00) so you can see if you like the color.  Pedicures always last longer if you can do a touch up yourself with the polish.  While I did not have a full pedicure (I had a polish change and they shaped my toenails nicely!) I do like how they opened a new package for the file and the clip.  They not only have nail stations but offer waxing services as well. Plus, up in front of the store they sell lots of fun candles, perfume, jewelry and flip flops. When leaving I noticed their tag line: “Clean freaks are us. Call us crazy, but good hygiene actually inspires us!” It is nice to know that the salon is clean and they are committed to maintaining that!

Disclosure:  I did receive a gift card for the service. All opinions are my own.

Warm Weather is here in New England: tips from @fashioncoach

The forecast calls for sunny skies the next few days so bring on the flip flops and short sleeved t’s!  Whether you are a stay at home mom, working mom or work at home mom we all need to get dressed. For me I work at home and I do NOT wear sweatpants. I do get dressed for work every day but some days it’s hard to put together a good outfit.  Susan Kanoff, of  A Great New Look talked with us about her style tips, easy ways to dress, and what not to do in warm weather.

Q: Let’s start in the closet. Are there some do’s and don’ts for organizing a closet?

Well let me first say that when your closet is in good shape, getting dressed will be easier and less stressful.

My philosophy is to only keep pieces that

  • Fit well
  • Work well with your unique body shape
  • Feel comfortable (important!)
  • Are in good shape (no pills, rips, stains, etc…ditch those!)
  • Work with other pieces in your closet. We all have those “orphans” that we just can’t seem to make work for one reason or another!
  • Make you look and feel fabulous…you deserve it!!

Go through your clothes piece by piece and ask yourself these questions. If the answer is “no” to any of them, it’s time to get rid of some things!  Have some boxes or trash bags handy and sort discards by “toss”, consign (great way to make a few extra dollars!), and donate. You may also want to start an alteration bag. Sometimes a piece can be salvaged just by taking up the sleeves or shortening the hem.

If you can’t figure out what you’re wearing (or not wearing) try the hanger trick.  When you re-hang pieces that you’re wearing, face the hanger the opposite way.  In a few months you will notice a pattern. We tend to wear the same things over and over again—the statistics are that we wear only wear about 20% of our wardrobe. Sound familiar?

Q: Do you put together outfits or put all the shirts together, pants, etc?

Once you have done a thorough closet weeding, think about how you select your outfits and organize your closet in a way that works well for you. My personal preference is to group clothes together by categories and colors.  For instance, I put all my tops together separating them by sleeveless, blouses, long sleeve, etc. Then, I organize each category by color.  I do the same for pants, jackets, dresses, etc. It doesn’t matter how you categorize, the bottom line is to create a system that works for you, so getting dressed each morning is stress-free!
Q:  What’s in this season?

Spring is all about the bright and bold. One of my favorite stand-out colors this season is vibrant royal blue, which looks great on just about everyone. Try incorporating this color in jeans, a dress or top. If you’re a bit “color shy”, punch in color with accessories. A bright statement necklace, scarf or bag will transform an outfit from “just okay” to a show stopper!

The crisp black and white palette is also in for spring and you will see many graphic prints in this color combo.  Go edgy by mixing bold stripes with prints or keep it simple and classic with a pair of white jeans and a black tee. Either way, you’ll look so chic!

You will also see a lot of florals out there. Floral blazers, dresses and blouses are all in style this season and oh so feminine!

Q:  While we love our flip flops one should not wear into a traditional office?

Definitely not!! Flip-flops are for very casual attire and not for the office! Try peep-toe wedges or a fabulous sandal instead. If you’re in a conservative corporate environment such as the banking industry, sandals may not be option at all.  Although some offices have become ultra casual, I’m not a big fan of unprofessional attire. I always tell my clients to “step up” their work wardrobe & dress for the job they want!
