Back to school time: a backpack, lunch gear and more

Today on 980 WCAP-AM we were talking back to school items! It is almost that time – do you have your backpacks ready and lunch boxes set? If not check out some of these cool items that came across the trendymommies.com desk.

Backpacks – Love LL Bean backpacks as they are PVC and BPA free and they last forever.  My 9 year old is using the backpack we got for my 12 year old last year and it’s as good as new. They really have the best selection for kids of all ages. We do like how if you visit the store they help with the sizing for your child.

Whole Foods sells the adorable Crocodile Creek backpacks and lunch boxes that are perfect for preschoolers that are eco-friendly and cute. Whole Foods also had the Eco Kids ice packs, and quite the selection of all natural items to store in your kids backpacks from lip balms to hand sanitizer and even a bamboo utensil set. The whole foods vanilla honey lip balm is great and if your middle schooler needs a good hand wipe (great for after gym class) have them try the Alba Botanica hawaiian 3 in 1 clean towelettes. We tested them out and they smell great!

Lunch storage needs to be fun, bright and colorful! The Plymouth based cool gear makes a great selection of lunch sacks, water bottles, salad storage items that are all BPA free.

Especially for the younger kids lice can continue to be a problem throughout the school year.  Babo Botanicals makes the best lice prevention kit. The shampoo and spray is 95% effective in preventing lice according to the company website. The great smelling tea tree scent is not too overpowering and is a must have for busy moms. I also love the moisturizing baby shampoo and wash, especially in the summertime – it’s perfect for dry skin.

If you struggle with your child in the morning rush with brushing their hair then you need a knot genie! It is a pain-free way to brush kids hair and even get them to brush their own hair. It is really what moms want. We tested it out and it really works.

For the college crew: grab a go go pillow for a fun way to store your tablet and read in bed.  My tweens actually love this pillow. It holds the tablet so you can have it on your lap. It folds up as a travel pillow and can even work as a backpack (perfect if younger kids head to grandmas after school) Waterbobble.com is another neat invention and a must have at college. Its’ a BPA free water bottle with a filter right inside and affordable starting at $9.99. Now you can have filtered water at your fingertips.  If you just want to carry your phone here is a must have accessory that is slim and holds your id, a credit card and some cash. CardNinja.com is a great accessory for apple, android and blackberry phones. It fits right on the back eliminating the need for a wallet!

Rewriting the dinnertime rules #PlaywithVeggies @BirdsEye @JennetteMcCurdy

We had so much fun at the Birds Eye event in NYC a few weeks back. We have been experimenting with veggies to make dinnertime fun  (Birds Eye was kind enough to send me some veggies to try!) and I wanted to share with you 4 new dinnertime rules to help get your family excited about eating their veggies!

Rule 1 Role Reversal – Kids get to pick the menu and the veggies. Have them pick a theme and dress up and decorate.

Rule 2 Play with your Birds Eye Veggies – Use your veggies to make smiley faces or create something fun on your plate. Yes, it is ok to play with your veggies!

Rule 3 Celebrate Every Bite – Did you know it can take up to 12 times for kids to try a new type of food before they begin to like it? So keep em coming!

Rule 4 Be a Veggie Explorer – There are so many different ways to serve veggies. We love the smoothie recipe – yes, veggies can go in your smoothie so experiment!

Anytime you involve your kids in the cooking process and have them lead the way is one way I have found it easy to get them to experiment with their veggies. Pizza making is one of their favorite meal times and making sure the veggies are chopped up small helps a bit when adding them as a topping.

Disclosure: Birds Eye sent me a gift package with recipes and veggies to experiment with! All opinions are my own.

Back to school: best packed snacks!

I love a good snack and my kids do too!  I was so excited to receive these good tasting products for my kids (and me to test out) for back to school. They are all perfect for back to school snacks (and lunches) so make sure to check them out.

Chobani – this is a new favorite of mine as they have great flavors in a natural greek yogurt. Even their tag line says it all: go real.  Moms, we really want real ingredients and this yogurt is simply made and tastes great. If you want to have a tasty snack for your kids when they get home try the Chobani Flip for a great mix of either pistachio, chia seeds, granola or almond. One side is greek yogurt and the other side is the mix-ins.  My favorite is the Blueberry Power. Another favorite is the Chobani bite. This is the 3.5 oz cup of great flavor combinations like honey and ginger and  mint with dark chocolate chip in a small size that contains only 100 calories and 8 grams of protein.  My kids also loved the Fylin dragon fruit champions tubes. This low fat greek yogurt tube needs no spoon and is great for their school snack.

DelMonte Fruit Burst Squeezers  – These are a great on-the-go snack. Made with natural fruit purees and juices, they are a nice alternative to apple sauce.  They come in  two varieties:  Simply fruit (Strawberry, Mixed Berry, Apple Cinnamon) and Fruit and Veggie (Peach-Mango , Blueberry) and is the perfect way to kids to eat a serving of fruits and veggies. They contain 1 1/2 servings of fruit and are a great source of vitamin A & C. They do not contain any artificial flavors or high fructose corn syrup.

Applegate Farms  -  Sometimes it is hard to get kids to eat a sandwich and deli meat is tricky. Especially wondering what is in the deli meat. No antibiotics, no nitrates, no junk and the taste of the Applegate farm deli meats is GOOD. They even have a new bologna and you don’t have to wonder what’s in it!   This summer was the perfect time to try the natural beef hot dog. No chemicals or nitrates in this dog!

chia seed? It’s everywhere!

So many fun food items have come across my desk that I have to share some with you!  I have seen chia seeds now everywhere. In fact there were in my yogurt topping this morning.  The folks at Drink Chia sent me a few drinks to try.  It is a chia seed beverage. What is a chia seed you ask?  The chia seed is high in fiber and some call it a superfood.  Yes it is the same seed found in the chia pet. While flax seeds are popular chia seeds are becoming more popular it seems. I poured some of the chia drink for me and the kids and they did try it but did not like that they were floating in the beverage. It does take some getting used to drinking the chia beverage as the seeds tend to puff up a bit in the drink and it’s almost like you are drinking something foreign. However this drink is good for hydration, endurance, heart health and brain power so test it out and if you like it drink up! With only 50 calories and 3 grams of fiber it is an interesting choice for a drink but I liked it!
