We love Stop & Shop! (especially the prepared foods) Stop & Shop’s full-time nutritionist, Julie Menounos had some great tips on ways to get the most out of your grocery shopping experience. She provides some very useful advice that will help you on the path to better nutrition.  See my comments in bold as it is true, we know what we need to do as moms to shop smartly but it’s always nice to remind ourselves with these great tips.
With health eating in mind, Stop & Shop sent us a $20 gift card and armed with Julie’s tips I was ready to go shop.
JulieMenounos’ Simple Tips:
Before You Leave:
Don’t shop hungry. Be sure to have a light meal or snack with fiber and protein before shopping to avoid impulse buys.
I KNOW THIS All too well. When you are hungry you tend to lean toward the not so good food too.
Make a grocery list. Plan out your week of meals, snacks and beverages and those you need to restock. Organize the list by the departments of the grocery store to save you time shopping.
How many times have you not done this and it takes twice as long?? It does become a nightmare if you wander aimlessly and without vision
During Your Shopping Trip:
Shop the perimeter of the store. This is where the freshest, most natural food lies. So fill most of your cart with fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and dairy items then venture down the center aisles to stock up on staple goods like whole grains, beans, vegetable-based soups, canned tuna and wild salmon.
Sometimes I do get lost in the chip aisle…
Pay attention to symbols to help you shop. For example, at Stop & Shop, you can look for the Healthy Ideas® symbol next to the price to find products that are better for you and your family.
Now I will chose and look for this symbol over another alternative
Read the ingredient list. If you are not sure how to accurately interpret the Nutrition Facts label, the ingredients list can provide you with enough information to make a healthy decision. Ingredients are listed in order of weight from high to low. In general, the less ingredients the better. If sugar is listed in the first or second ingredient of your breakfast cereal, look to swap it.
I do this more often now, it can slow you down a bit if you are on a mission but worth it for your health.
When You Get Home:
Focus on filling half your plate with fruit and non-starchy vegetables. Fill the other half with whole grains (bread, rice, pasta and starchy vegetables like corn, peas, potatoes) and lean protein (chicken, turkey, beef seafood, beans).
Don’t forget a serving of dairy (milk, yogurt or cheese) either incorporated into the meal, on the side or as dessert!
Think about adding fruits and veggies to your families’ favorite foods. Add strawberries in cereal, blueberries in yogurt, sliced pears in a grill cheese sandwich, shredded carrots and zucchini to pasta sauce and broccoli on pizza.
I do try to look for ways to sneak in fruits and veggies and try to balance out the meals
Â
Thanks to Julie for those great tips!

Happy Spring! Hopefully the snow we just got yesterday will melt quickly! Each season I switch my closets and I cannot wait until the weather gets warmer. What trends/colors are you excited about this spring? Here are the top 5 trends that are on my must have list.
1. Black & White – Whether it’s a skirt or a sweater, the trend of black and white looks crisp and sleek. Luckily I own a few nice pieces already – see my photos below. I also love the look of black and white polka dots.
2. Florals – flowers are a big trend this spring (it reminds me of the 80’s!) Check out Ann Taylor or jcrew.com for inspiration
3. Silver – Especially on accessories this will work for day or night dressing. It looks especially chic when combined with white.
4. Sheer – You have to be careful with this one. Try a more subtle shirt with sheer side panels poking through.
5. Global – this influence of exotic, colorful prints just pop! Try it in a scarf or a cute pair of shorts if you cannot embrace a full dress.
This is the picture of what I woke up to this morning.
A spring snow day!
We interrupt this blog posting that was slated for today on what to wear on the first day or spring to bring you: “what to do on this snow day and what are you wearing in the freezing cold day” blog post. geeze…just when you think you are safe to bring out the spring clothes mother nature dumps a pile of snow the day before the first day of spring and adds another snow day so the kids are off from school today. Thank goodness I did not switch over my winter closet to the spring closet the other day as today I am wearing my fleece leggings, cuddle duds and fleece turtle neck and of course still ugg boots (yeah, I realize they are not trendy but they are warm, so there!) Luckily my husband is working from home today so we are switching off checking email, calls, work business to tend to the dozens of arguments that have already took place this morning. It is only 9:30. So here is what we have on the agenda today for the kids last snow day off from school of the season (yes, this WILL be the last snow day,so enjoy!)
1. Play in the snow – have to enjoy it while it is here cause warm weather is right around the corner!
2. Bake something – ok, you all know I am not the bake from scratch person and luckily I have a brownie mix and cinnamon rolls readily available!
3. We are going to make sure all is set for school tomorrow early, so there is no running around at the last minute tonight and we can enjoy a family movie tonight – red box here we come!
4. Â I knew I saved the hot chocolate kit for something special. This kit I bought after the holidays comes complete with big square marshmallows and peppermint sticks! yum!
5. The kids love to walk in the neighborhood after the snow fall and check on our neighbors and we will probably have the neighborhood kids over to play outside or quietly inside.
ok! That will take us about 1 hour so any more suggestions on what to do for the next 8 hours on this snow day? lol!
Well, with weather in New England you just never know if spring is actually here until way past April. Last night I could feel a touch a spring as the girls and I tried on dresses @OldNavy for an upcoming fashion show at @MiddlesexCommon. I was so sleep deprived from the daylight savings time that I forgot to take photos! But I do love the selection of spring dresses and cute outfits at Old Navy. It seems yellow, orange and flower print is in. I love the color combinations this spring as well. We did a bit of shopping this weekend and this yellow outfit for my 8 year old is from the gap and the gray dress is from Old Navy. Come see us @MiddlesexCommon on Saturday, March 30th from 1-3 for a fun spring fashion show!
I just got a great haircut from Jackie at Anthony David Salon in Burlington. I will be going back for my color! I love when I find a place that is clean, the receptionist is nice, the stylists are down to earth and the cuts and color are affordable. I have found that and more at Anthony David Salon. If you are in need of a fresh cut and color check them out. The salon is offering 20% off for new clients. They also have their 20/20 referral program in which if you refer a friend, you each receive 20% off. Also, now until March 31st they have a special program: the client that refers the most new clients to the salon before March 31st will receive a blowout party for three of their friends on Thursday evening (4/4/13). They will be serving wine too! I also like that they use more natural products. For example they use NaYo, a revolutionary new, yogurt-based, hair coloring system—created by Kemon, Italian Hair Fashion that is free of ammonia, PPD dyes and unpleasant aromas. Most of the products used in the Anthony David Salon are free of sulfates, parabens and sodium chloride. The salon was very clean and sleek and the cut I got was great. Check out their web site and facebook to find out more.
Disclosure: As part of Boston Parent Bloggers I was invited for a free cut and blow dry. All opinions are my own.
